BEFORE YOU COME

Here at the Mighty Atom studios we pride ourselves in our ability to capture the true flavour of the band and their sound. We create first class release quality results but you must do your bit to help the process along as well.

TRACKING

We nearly always try and get the band to set up in a live type situation.

The drummer gets his own drum headphone mix whilst the others get a separate mix. We always encourage drummers to practice with a click track before coming into record - this can make a real difference to the finished result - the feel is usually much much improved and any editing and timing issues can easily be fixed. Playing with a click also enables technology and jiggery pokery to be introduced if wanted - like drum loops - cheesy synths or whackey programming stuff.

Having said this some songs are better off without a click and some songs we drop the click out at specific a point to enable the band to take off of there own accord - for instance maybe a song needs to speed up for the ending.

All you drummers out there start practising now ! get yourselves a pair of headphones and a beat box - it will really improve your playing and you might find as most drummers do that you actually like playing with the click.

Also drummers should make sure there kit has nice new skins and not those skins that are two years old and covered in gaffa tape - they will not sound good   and it wont be our fault.

As stated above we usually try and set everyone up to play as a band with guide vocals so everyone knows where they are in the song, we go for a good drum and bass take then concentrate on laying back the guitars and depending on the song double tracking meat and veg guitars to fatten the whole thing up.

Sometimes the guide guitars are used as they may have that feel and sound that cannot be overdubbed

It's always about the song and the feel and there certainly are no rules.

GUITARS AND BASS

Guitar players should make sure the instrument intonation is set up right - it is something you really ought to spend the money on before you come, the cost to get this done will save you time and effort in the end.   You may find your guitar is in tune but is it in tune all the way up the neck? Find a good guitar guy.

Always bring your own amps/pedals and favourite gear as this will be your sound and your sound is what we want.

Always bring spare strings/sticks as there are no music shops near the cottage.

If you cant fit all your gear in the car and its a squeeze then leave the bass rig behind as this is the easiest instrument to di and get a good sound without amplification.

VOCALS

Vocals are so important and its not a good idea to leave them till five minutes before the mix - and for this reason I would encourage you to only attempt one song per day - so if you are booked in for three days dont try and do seven songs unless you are totally amazing !!!

I always try and get singers up and running quite quickly maybe after the initial main tracks are laid. This gives us time to spend on harmonies and backing vocals. Some singers are at there best early evening and some first thing in the morning. (by the way we normally start at around 10am and finish at about 7.30pm sometimes later depending on the vibe)

MIXING

When we start mixing it is really important that you listen at a fairly modest level and check you can hear the balance is ok.

Listening to your mix at full blast will make everything sound great until you get it home and then it wont sound so good.

I am using a full on Pro Tools HD3 system these days so recalling your mix to rebalance the tracks at a later date is not a problem - however we will have to charge you as it takes up valuable studio time.

MASTERING

Mastering is an extra service offered which I do from home as you cannot really master tracks in the studio you mixed them in - you just cant make

any proper real decisions about the sound of the track etc - I have specialized equipment that I use for this - you can discuss mastering at your session with me.

I hope you found this page useful and informative. Good luck to all
